Before there was the Manville Mustangs, our football team was called “The Yellow Jackets” I guess we carried on yellow or “gold” as out preferred athletics color. One of the team photos I’ve seen has them posing with a football that says “1930 champs” and in general, it’s rumored that the team was amazing. These photos though, date sometime in the mid 1940’s… you can see the Manville water tower looming in the backround alluding to the fact that this top photo was taken somewhere in the niehborhood of the current Manville High School despite the faact that it wasn’t even built yet.

The next 2 photos are just random classroom scenes. The bottom one is dated 1948. I’ve been told the the top one is more recent… If you have any more info on these I’d love to hear about it.

the top photo appears to be from the 1960’s based on the fashion and hair styles.
The top photo has to from the 60s. . . Manville High School. I had Mrs. Tymecki in the 70s, not much later.
I would love to see a close up of that 2nd yellow jackets photo you have. I wanna see if my Gramps is in it. I’ll ask my mom is she still has the pic and his actual Football jacket from when he played. Aparently from the stories I got from him that silly team was in fact a HUGE deal and they where very very good.
The Manville students went to High School in Bound Brook..that is why there is such a rivlary even today. Go to the library in town and find out what you are wrong about.
The first student to the right is Donna Sabatura (spelling?). She was two years under me (Class of 1966) and we were neighbors. She was in high school from 1964 – 1968. Given that most of us took typing in our freshman or sophomore years, I believe the picture would either be 1964 or 1965 – definitely between ’64 and ’68. I also know the person next to her but right now can’t think of her name – will check my yearbooks or hopefully my aging brain will kick in.

This pic was taken at the Main St School. My father is seated next to the teacher who is standing. He said it was taken in 1948. It was his last year in school.

I was one of the Yellow Jackets. I have on # 24 jersey in the second picture, the group picture. This picture was taken at the beginning of the 1947 season at the Evans field in Weston. I recognize a few of the players. On the botton left first row, without a helmet, is Chubby Moranda On the right side standing, at the end of the row, is Coach Marty Wiess. I remember a few more players but not where they are in this picture.
The first picture, is of a scrimmage amoung our own team. I recognize Chubby on the right hand side blocking. This was a very long time ago!!! My memory is not that good! If anyone out there recognizes anyone else or knows more about the Yellow Jackets, you can email me.
Mr. Polak: I think I remember my Dad saying he was on the Yellow Jackets, although I always thought he played baseball and basketball, not football. His name was Steve Wass. Any recollection? His nickname was “Cappy” and I think that was because he was captain of one of the baseball teams.
Mr. Polak, did you coach the youth wrestling program in Manville in the late 60’s? My name is Jim Brown. I think I wrestled for you. Don’t know if you remember me I had glasses and a crewcut. What a great influence you had on me. I can’t thank you enough for your work with all of the youth of Manville! Thanks again!

First, I’m sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Yes, I did coach the youth wrestling program from 1962-1985. I do remember you, and also, I remember the bedspread your mother made for me as a gift from all the boys I had in the program. So great to hear back from you. You are truly loved by all of the youth of Manville. Can’t believe you have such a great memory. My Mom appreciates you remembering her gift also. Mom and Dad retired in 1989 and moved back to their hometown of Claxton, GA. They are well and having a great retirement. My brother Mark lives outside Atlanta, GA.

Adam Sandusky is my grandfather’s brother, and played for the 1930 champs. He is in a team picture I have on my family tree website http://www.CarmonSandusky.com. Click on the “Sandusky (Rachele)” folder and look at the 2nd picture, which is the 1930 team.
Adam’s son was Mike Sandusky, my mother (Millie Sandusky)’s cousin, who played for the Steelers from 1957-65. His picture is the 5th one over in that folder.

Where is the picture of “Herman’s Hermits”? Didn’t they play at MHS i nthe early 60’s?
Herman’s Hermits played at the VFW in 1963. I remember the year because that’s when my grandmother died and I couldn’t go to the concert.
Haha.. Herman’s Hermits..I was at that concert. They didn’t play anything, the girls were screaming too much. My first concert??? They even mention Manville on their album cover. That had to be 64,65,or 66. Not sure.

I was at the Herman’s Hermits concert also. I was from Somerville. I spoke to Peter Noone and He remembers this concert also. (how would he forget ! )
Yes, Mrs.Agnes Cjaikowski, Towered under the 7th graders at a stately and proud 4 foot 9 in heels.
But a great teacher-not to be confused with the slugs and losers later hired by the BOE.I forgot to mention in earlier posts that there WERE some very good teachers at MHS, but they had to associate with the others.
Students respected her regardless of her size because she had class,no pun intended.Never an unruly situation or problem because unlike some others in the Teacher’s Lounge,she was a pro.She came to teach.

I remember these teachers’ first names because us guys never called them Miss or Mrs.-just their first names.(Behind their backs) You know,Lucille,Agnes,Jesse,Ruby,Theresa, but the names we had for the Role Models of the other gender were way different.

They did play later at the Hullabaloo, and so did The Young Rascals and Paul Revere and The Raiders….filmed for TV and it must be out there SOMEWHERE

My grandfather, Steve Zydiak, played for the 1930 Manville Yellow Jackets team. Ive got a Manville News, newspaper cliping, from october 29, 1970, which showed the remaining members of the team. There is also a picture, honoring Miky Repka, presented by Nick Longo. I also have the picture of the 1930 championship team, with the trophy and the football, that says, 1930 champs. My grandfather is second from the left, second row. God I sure do miss him !!!!!
